TextFlow
I got a link from a friend of mine for a tool that I find really interesting! I haven't had the chance to try it out myself yet, but I sure as hell will and I think I might enjoy it quite a bit! But then again, I love trying out new tools!
http://www.textflow.com/ (26/10/2009)
It's a (seemingly great) way to handle different versions of the same document, so it might be a great way to handle feedback on something you write, something that happens a lot for designers working in teams.
Click the "See"-button and have a looksie yourself.
I'll be sure to get back to you once I've tried it! Oh! And if You've tried it, lemme know what you think!
Unity3D is now free!
These are the best news ever for indies!
The really AWESOME game engine Unity3D, previously priced at (very) reasonable $200 for an Indie-licence is now FREE!

The project I've been posting about, "Iskall" is using Unity. I've been using Unity for some of my own projects. I personally recommend it.
I really think they're right with the following statement:
For the pros, the difference between a $2000 fee and a $0 fee is almost nothing, except that individual developers can just try it out for free and fall in love with it. We think it's really exciting. The [Unite] conference is already underway, and we already had a couple hundred people do classroom sessions.

AboutGameDesign.com
Hey y'all!
Just wanted you all to know that a new project starts today.
We're a bunch of game designers from various parts of Europe that's gonna share a blog and write about game design. The "twist" is that there's always an active topic that we have to post about and the topic is changed every two weeks.
We got people from ex-GRIN, Outbreak Studios, Radon Labs, Strabreeze, Spellbound and Freelancing.
I'll re-post the stuff I write there here on my blog as well with a day or two of delay, but to read everything the other great guys write, you'll have to visit the site:
I really think About Game Design (AGD) can become a great learning experience. Oh, and feel free to join the AGD fan page on Facebook.
Blog Update
Quick Post:
I just updated WordPress (my blog system), so please let me know if you encounter any bugs or other problems. Comment this post or just e-mail me.
Thank you.
Difficulty Systems 101
Normally gaming sites like IGN and Gamespot aren't the most resourceful place to go to to learn game design but stranger things happens.
IGN recently posted a quite interesting read about different approaches to difficulty in games. You might want to disregard the lack of respect for production time and cost, etc. with comments like:
It's a wonder then, when so many titles can be finished in a week or less these days, that more developers don't simply implement a system like this.
- James O'Connor, IGN AU
But it's an overall nice text. I find it wonderful that these giant mainstream sites discuss topics like this.
Head over to IGN and their "Difficulty Systems 101" at:

GaiKai – Streaming High End Media
A while back a service called OnLive was introduced. Immediately afterwards several other companies came and said:
- Hey, we got something similar!
One of them was Dave Perry with GaiKai. The idea is that you can play games by streaming only the video and audio, having a super computer somewhere do the actual computing. Hence, you can play demanding games like Call of Duty on a low end netbook if you have the bandwith.
If this works well, it could pretty damn well revolutionize the entire gaming industry.
Perry has just posted a video of him demoing the GaiKai service. If it's the real deal and no Wizard of Oz-thing it's friggin' amazing!

Gaikai Technology Demo (JULY 1, 2009) from David Perry on Vimeo.
This is just a simple demo of our Gaikai video game streaming technology working in a Firefox browser with no installs, no plug-ins. These retail games (selected because we think they are cool) are all being played on a remote server with a 800 mile round trip to my PC.
The games are unmodified and are completely virtualized so we can run multiple different games on the same server at the same time. One of the reasons the iPhone has over a billion downloads now, is because they made access really easy (click to download, click to play), we have managed to get our technology down to just the single "click to play" so you can play anywhere on the web (home, work, school, on the road), and the games can come to you (on a Facebook canvas page, Myspace, Flash sites etc.)
We will start buying bulk servers soon and after that, we will begin closed beta in California, so make sure to sign up at: www.gaikai.com if you want to help us out. My blog is at: www.dperry.com

Issuu
As some of you might have figured out, I love web-apps and trying out new tools in pretty much all categories.
I recently got a mail from a friend inviting me to register an account at this place “Issuu”.
Thank you, Jesper! (http://jesperbylund.wordpress.com/ 17/6/09)
I’d never heard about it before so I looked it up on Wikipedia and guess what, it turns out that it seems great!
You can publish whatever you write there and they host it, provide statistics and let’s you embed your text anywhere. In a nutshell.
As I said, I’d never heard about it and none of my friends I’ve asked either, which is really strange since apparently it’s been around for years.
I’m gonna give a thorough test run and I’m really liking it at the moment. Right now I have it for my resumé at my CV-page and I’m thinking about publishing all my articles with it.
To show you guys what I mean, I’ve embedded my older post about Achievements. All I did was to upload my original document and the rest was automated.
The great thing about this whole concept is that you read it in the browser. If I were to link to a downloadable .pdf-file most of you probably wouldn’t bother to click it, download it and then open it up to read it. But by embedding the document here, I bet all of you will at least look at it, even if you won’t read the whole thing.
Sorry for the downtime
Hah, just my luck!
I'd been waiting with upgrading the blog to 2.7.1 for a long time, afraid something might go wrong and because I didn't feel I've had the time.
But yesterday I finally got down to it and upgraded. It went smooth without any hiccups.
Guess what I find out today? It seems as if a few hours after I upgraded, a new stable release was made available! I had already postponed it several months, why couldn't I have waited a few more hours?!
I immediately decide to upgrade once again and of course, this time I encounter some serious trouble. Just my luck...
Anyway, I'm sorry about the downtime if only for an hour. It's been resolved.
If you notice anything strange or broken on the site, please let me know!
