I just the best idea for a Facebook game!

Too bad I can't code that stuff! Gotta write down the design anyway. It's brilliant!

OnLive – Thoughts

Posted by Arcade

Okay, so, OnLive is supposed to a service that lets you play high end games on low end machines by sending input and streaming video/audio.

There's like a gazillion articles about it out there (there meaning the Internet) so I won't go further into details.

Just thought I'd give a quickie about what I think.

I think it's a great step, a great ambition, I hope it'll work amazingly well and that it will then affect the retailing industry. Unfortunately; I don't think that's gonna happen.

I'm in no way a networking expert. Heck, I hate trying to set up a fully functional network in Windows. Is it even possible? I mean, to actually get everything to work? Anyhow, I find it hard to believe what they say when they claim to have solved the latency issues.

From what I've gathered, there are actually people having tried it and they say it works like a charm.

If they were actually to get this thing working, I think it'd be a great compliment for already existing distribution channels. They wouldn't actually compete with Steam and definately not actual stores; but it'd be a nice addition. I'm pretty sure I'd use it.

Okay then, let's assume they can't fix the latency issue, will it all be crap? Most, if not all people say; yes. I say; nu-uh!

It would still be a great channel for games of particular genres, like adventure games and turn based anythings. Maybe I can't play Crysis like they say I can but then perhaps I can play Grim Fandango, Sam & Max or Jagged Alliance?

I hope they'll deliver an amazing service.

onLive's optional hardware

onLive's optional hardware. You can plug into a TV and play from there. Awesomeness!

Misc. facts:

Apparently Dave Perry says he's doing something similar but in a smaller scale. Google it.

Gaikai is another service similar to onLive but for 3D MMO's. Google it.

PS. This isn't any April Fool's stuff.

Want Spotify?

Posted by Arcade

Spotify is the new "big thing". I've been using it for a few months now and I love it. Basically, if you didn't already know, it's an application that allows you to stream music from an enormous library.

The user has access to tracks of all major labels and numerous smaller labels, with the repertoire being constantly extended through new labels. The tracks can be found via search for artists, titles, albums, genres or year of publication.

The only way to get an account right now is to get an invite and I just so happens to have a couple to give away. So I thought I'd give one away here.

Just comment this post, telling me what your favorite game is and mention one thing you like about that game. It can be any game and anything about that game. Then at the end of next week I'll send an invite to one of you guys, chosen at random.

Remember to give me some way to contact you in the comment, e-mail, facebook or MSN for example.

Best of luck! I'll of course announce the winner here as well.

My first – The blog serie

Posted by Arcade

I just had a splendid idea!

"My first" is a serie of blog posts I'll post on this blog. Since I'm new in the gaming industry, there will be a first of everything. When that happens, I'll post about it here. The Title of the post will be "My first - [X]" and I'll tag it with the "my first"-tag, so you can easily find all of them by either searching or selecting the tag.

I've edited the "My first - Reading the Comments" post so it fit this new template. I'll immediately write two My first, posting one tonight and one tomorrow!

What do you think of the idea? Please let me know by commenting.

Pictures

Posted by Arcade

I got a comment yesterday about this blog from a friend and co-worker; Cozy Dave. I haven't tried translating his nickname to English before, sounds awesome.

He thinkgs there aren't enough pictures here. Now, he might be right. I know I sometimes get a little carried away with the writing, hence many posts being heavy on text with an abrupt endingwhen I realise I've probably written to much yibberish and try and stop.

So I'll try and make my posts easier on the eyes with more copyrights-protected images. For starters I updated the "Pretty Art"-post since it's very topic is graphics in games. Just do a search for "Pretty Art" and you'll find it if the link is broken.

Downtime – New Host

Posted by Arcade

...And we're back!

The blog was down for three days because of a host-change didn't go as smooth as planned to say the least. I apologize for that.

I'm now running on my own installation of WordPress(.org) instead of their hosting and setup on wordpress.com.

If you notice anything strange, formating looking weird, broken links, anythihng at all, please let me know by posting a comment or contacting me some other way.

Thank you.

Reason of absence

Posted by Arcade

So uhm... I haven't posted anything in a while and I'm not sure my excuse is adequate. For the last week and a half, pretty much all I've been doing except from work is gaming.

Usually, I don't game that much because of lack of time. But really, this fall is too good to pass up. I figured there is a part of the 24h-cycle I haven't fully made use of; the night. So listen to my symphony of the night! I've stocked up on energy drinks and when I get tired I'll drink some. Of course, this isn't a valid method for long but right now I have both Fallout 3 and LittleBigPlanet so drastic measures are needed.

Though, let it be heard that I haven't forgot about the blog! I've secretly been writing on a couple of posts (one on graphics and one on the "magic circle") and shortly I'll post my thoughts (not reviews!) on Fallout 3 as well as the happiest game in a long time; LittleBigPlanet.

Oh, one more thing! I just gotta share this with you guys because I laughed out loud at the office while watching this. (Not that I watch YouTube at work! ... I saw it on Gametrailers...)

Web Log

Posted by Arcade

I thought I'd share my thoughts about why I chose to blog with WordPress and why I'm doing it on my own domain.

The term BLOG comes from web log.

A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order. Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries.

- http://www.sussexlearningnetwork.org.uk/glossary/B (20/10-08)

I decided that I wanted a place to express my way of thinking when it comes to subjects I'm passionate about. I'd already been blogging for 1-2 years, some posts being about games and design but most being about trivial stuff, like me cooking stroganoff. My stroganoff is the best by the way. The problem is, that blog, although still alive is very unfocused and is really only "useful" for my friends that wants to keep up to date with what I'm doing. That, and for giving bored people something to read.

The URL: http://arkadhallen.blogspot.com (20/10-08)

My hope is that this blog will actually be... well... Interesting. At least for people interested in what I for now will call experience design.

Because honestly, there are three kinds of blogs:

  1. Blogs that people write for their own sakes
  2. Blogs that people write for others
  3. A mix of the two above
I'm thinking this will be numero tres. Of course it's for my own sake, otherwise I wouldn't be doing it. But unlike my other "diary blog" this one might actually offer something for the reader as well.

The question I asked myself before deciding on WordPress on ArcadeBerg.com was:

"Where should I put my blog?"

The choice wasn't as abvious as one might think.

I considered using the blog-feature found on many community-sites such as IGN.com being one of, if not THE biggest gaming network or perhaps GiantBomb.com because the community seems great and the site is really web2.0. The only thing I had to do was to compare the pros and cons, right?

Pros:

  • Big Community
  • The mentioned community consist of gamers
  • The blog is put in blog-lists and people will have an easy time finding it
  • No personal maintanance needed
Cons:
  • Overfilled with features I don't want/need
  • The mentioned community consist of gamers (players, not creaters)
  • Little control over my blog
I quickly reached the conclusion that even if the pros are nice the cons are not. Of course I don't disrespect gamers in any way (...Look at me, I'm talking about gamers as "them". I am one!) but I don't feel that the majority of gamers that's only interrested in playing games will find this blog appealing.
As an alternative, I thought about setting up my own blog by installing it on one of my domains; systems like perhaps WordPress, Nucleus or whatever. It's great, you get total control and stuff but it's such a hassle to keep it updated and prevent hacking, etc. Therefore I discarded that idea as well.
So what I wanted was a scalable blog-system giving me a great deal of control but leaving the hosting to the blog-provider. My other blog I mentioned is hosted by Google's Blogger. A truly great system indeed, however I didn't feel that it catered to my needs for this site but WordPress seemed to do just that.
So here I am, on a WordPress-hosted blog using my own domain. Hopefully it'll all turn out great.

Let there be a blog!

Posted by Arcade

My name is Arcade. I guess that alone tells a lot about me.

I’m a designer.

Most of all, I’m a game designer. It’s what I love doing; fiddling with game mechanics, gameplay, cognitive psychology, human and computer interaction, etc.

I’m currently employed at GRIN i Gothenburg as a level designer, working on a project with the project name: Faith.

I have a Bachelor Degree from the University in Skövde in Sweden after studying three years of Computer Game Development - Game Design.

The reason I call this blog “Learning Game Design” isn’t because I’m going to try and teach you anything, but because I will keep learning every day and become better at what I do. I’d say I’m quite skilled today, but then again I thought the same thing about myself a few years ago. The following year I thought “Man, was I way off or what?” and yet again, one year later history repeated itself and that’s life, right? As I learn new things and find new angles and perspectives I thought I’d share some of it with you guys.

I’m hoping that in one year from now I’ll be able to read some of the early posts in this blog and think “Hey, I’m even more excellent at everything now!”.

There are many different reasons to "blog", none being the best. This is something I thought I'd discuss in a coming post but I just wanted to mention that I'll only post when I actually have something to say and therefor there might be times without new posts being published for quite some time.

I hope you'll enjoy reading what I write and I sure hope I'll enjoy writing what you'll read!
