Play while installing
Just like everyone I hate having to wait for games to be downloaded and/or installed on my computer or console.
This may already be used in same games that I didn't know about. If so; that's great. But I would love for games to be playable before they're completely on the harddrive. The actual game logic is never all that big, it's always the content, like art and audio that takes a great amount of space.
So why not make sure that the "level 1 data" is handled first, so you can at least play that while waiting for the rest?
When installing Microsoft Office 2010 (Beta), they do just that. You can start using the stuff immediately and to be honest, I don't know what's being done in the background.
I bet you feel like a better person now after reading this!

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I’m sure the Office community on Facebook would love hearing what you think about the Beta so far. They’re a fun, boisterous community.

Thanks again!

Minigames during loading is a patent owned by Namco. Just throwing it out there.

In the recent Fifa Soccer games you can fool around with one player on the field during loading against a golie which is quite nice actually. But I don’t know if that is considered being a mini game…

True, but that’s for loading.
When making games for the PS3 and 360 there are actual rules that state that if a loading scene is longer than X seconds, you have to make it interactive so the player has something to do while loading.
Anyway, loading is one thing, but I would love to be able to play the game while installing it.
Thanks for commenting!

I thought the rules were that it should be something animating so you know that the game haven’t stopped loading or crashed.
The whole idea is really interesting. I remember playing Metal Gear Solid for the PS3 and they had a looong (!!) loading time in the beginning of the game since the game wanted to install stuff to the harddrive. I thought the whole idea with a console was just to pop in the disc and play…
