My Favorite 100 Games
I'm not sure it's right of me to say that I've been busy today.
I went to an job interview today before lunch and one question I got was "What was the last game you played that changed your life?". Quite the question, right?
Anyway, I answered Fable 2 but it got me thinking about all my favorites games, so I decided to write down a list of my 100 favorite games. It's quite interesting actually, since I can see how much of it is from the same publisher, etc.
Disclaimer: These are the first 100 that came to mind. The list is already over 100 and I haven't arranged them by rank. But they're all good games! Games that were/are incredibly fun for me to play as a gamer, not necessarily the games with best "game design".
- I've finished 78% of the games.
- The most commong genre tags are Platformer and RPG.
- The games are somewhat evenly spread over the years of release. (Cool!)
- I seem to like the games published by Nintendo, EA and Konami
- Most of the "retro"-games are for the SNES.
There you have it. My gamer's haven!
(Damn it... "Search and Replace" Platform with Platformer also took effect in the title of column 2....)

Not a single Valve game..? Or Id Software.
Nice list, interesting read.

@David Lundvall:
Hah, that’s true! I didn’t realize. That’s actually quite strange, since I’m a big fan of Valve and I do think they release nothing but great games.

you know you do have to explain army of two, don’t you?

@gutek
Haha, I figured. Since I don’t have Gears there.
Simply put, Army of Two gave me one of the best playing experiences in coop I’ve had in quite some time. I’ve finished the game four times.
It has a whole bunch of problems in pretty much every aspect, incl. game design but it was still so much fun! Better than Gears if you ask me.

When did you start gaming, Arcade? 1991?
My ‘favourites’ have changed a lot over the years. I used to be really fond of Sega Games when I was about 8-11 or something like that. Even some early PC games (like Jagged Alliance 2) I used to like a lot but can’t stand now. I definitely do not have a top 100 favourite list, my preference has changed too much.
I only have one real all time favourite which scores a solid 10 across the board; Hostile Waters: Antheus Rising (PC, CD-ROM)

Something like that.
Of course, my preferences has also changed a lot during the years and some of the games just don’t cut it anymore. Jagged Alliance 2 for example; it was a great game but judging from todays standard, it’s barely playable. But I still keep the games as my favorites, because I’ve had a blast with them and I have nothing but fond memories of them.
If I were to to write a top-100 list of games that I like to play right now (without respect for the nostalgia of playing retro-games), pretty much all of them would be from the year post-2000, because frankly, games are getting better and better.
I’ve never heard of Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising before, but I see that it scored well with reviews back in the days. My loss.

It runs well on Windows XP, you can still try it. Everyone’s favourite soldier:

I think the graphics are getting better and better which makes the games more enjoyable because they feel more real. Our brain apparently appreciates that.
It is probably also what causes a lot of children to lose touch of reality…
Many game concepts have died and never truly been (properly) revived. Quarantine, G-Police, Fallout, X-com…
In my eyes, the overall quality of (PC) gaming is going down. Multiplayer is dumbed down for the masses, single player is often rushed and bug fixes are all too rare.
Sound, cinematics and graphics have taken a huge jump, though. Games are so beautiful nowadays.. Unfortunately, that’s only skin deep.
Although I must say that I highly appreciate the fluent controls of modern games!

“Although I must say that I highly appreciate the fluent controls of modern games!”
Which is one of the most important aspects of a game. I don’t care for graphics all that much.

Agreed. Of course this is taking it too an extreme, but PC Single Player “is dead”. But that’s not true. Remember casual gaming for example, which is growing like crazy.
But I personally prefer console games overall.

Glad to see Earthbound made it. It’s under appreciated by the general public. Great game though, really. I’m half-way through Mother 3 myself.
