Screenshot Button
I just had an idea.
One thing I really like with the iPhone is it's "hidden" screenshot feature. If you press the Home-button and the Lock-button at the same time, you take a screenshot and save it to your image-folder. It works anytime and anywhere, no matter what application or game you're running. I'm using this a lot to take screenshots from different games and some cool apps.
I would really love if there was an additional button on the controllers for the PS3 and 360 right above the Start-button. I want a shiny "Screenshot"-button there, which if pressed takes a screenshot of what's on the screen and saves it to my console's harddrive.
You often find yourself in situations where you'd want to take a screenshot but can't.
A lot of people take screenshots when playing on the PC, because it's so simple. You either use a program for it (like Fraps), some games have built in screenshot-keys or you snap a picture from the screen and paste it into an image program like Photoshop or even MS Paint.
And this isn't something that I only as a developer want, I know me and many gamers want it because we like looking at, creating and spreading screenshots. And personally, I don't think the developers/publishers of the games should have a problem with it, because all you do is getting people to notice your game. Unfortunately, many of them do care... A lot. Because they don't want the game shown in "uncontrolled" ways.
So, give us this feature you dirty console creators!
AboutGameDesign.com
Hey y'all!
Just wanted you all to know that a new project starts today.
We're a bunch of game designers from various parts of Europe that's gonna share a blog and write about game design. The "twist" is that there's always an active topic that we have to post about and the topic is changed every two weeks.
We got people from ex-GRIN, Outbreak Studios, Radon Labs, Strabreeze, Spellbound and Freelancing.
I'll re-post the stuff I write there here on my blog as well with a day or two of delay, but to read everything the other great guys write, you'll have to visit the site:
I really think About Game Design (AGD) can become a great learning experience. Oh, and feel free to join the AGD fan page on Facebook.
Have kids sell them!
The other day the doorbell rang and my girlfriend went to open it. There stood a little boy, seemingly lost and afraid of the world. He eventually managed to explain that he was selling small books full of different coupons with sale offers. My girlfriend really didn't want this, nor did she feel like spending the money. However, she like so many others can't help but feel an obligation to be nice to the kid and spent the 100 Swedish Crowns anyway.
So now she's sitting there, with a stack of crappy coupons on her hands and the kid is running around somewhere with a deviant grin on his face.
This is a brilliant scheme used for a long, long time; having kids sell stuff because people "just have to be nice to them". That's why I'm thinking about gathering up a troop of children (maybe using candy, I hear that's the most effective way to have them follow you) and having them run all around Sweden selling my privately developed indie-games!
Pure genius!
Oh, and btw! A new awesome game design project, somewhat similar to my blog is taking off on monday. Be ready! More info on monday!
Norse Mythology
There are a gazillion games out there based on Greek mythology. There's yet another billion based on the Japanese lore and still a crazy amount with the Chinese version.
And let's not forget all the ones with christianity in them.
I want more games with Norse mythology, damn it! We got characters that are just as cool as the Greeks and we got gore, blood, betrayal, giants, snakes, wolves, dragons, castles, love, horses, axes and the coolest beards ever!
There are even some great games on Norse mythology. How about Max Payne, huh!? Or Rune!
Now, enough with the Greek minotaurs and in with the Norse ice giants!
Arcade, over and out!
Let’s sew!
Okay, so I was thinking of stuff that I could do together with my girlfriend that's creative in mind and where you actually create something. Then, somehow I came to think of sewing plush animals (maybe 'cause Kanji does it in Persona 4, who knows) and I suggested it. She gave me a funny look, but eventually we went to buy the stuff needed; needles, cloth, button eyes etc.
Okay, so, five things came out of this:
- The knowledge that I really can't sew... Wow, I really can't.
- Mycreation, simply called; Arcenstein's Monster.
- Extreme laughter from my girlfriend when she saw Arcenstein's Monster finished.
- My girlfriend's creation, named Barney. And btw, she can sew... Bastard. Oh, and I meant the plush dude is named Barney, not my girlfriend.
- A gaming idea.
Now, about my idea. Maybe this has been done, if so, I haven't heard about it. But what about a sewing game for the Nintendo Wii? I'm not actually sure about how it would work. But with all these new ways of interaction with the Wii, the DS/iPhone, PS3's Wii-thingy and the 360's Project Natal; there really oughta be some way of doing a decent "game" out of it. I mean, they've made games about surgery.
Hey, they must include some stitches, right?
Anyway, as often here on my blog, "it's just a thought".
Think about it, make it and then let me know!
Stealing the value of games
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Earlier this week, I went to my storage and noticed that I've had a break in. Someone, has stolen my entire video games collection I had there. NES, SNES, PSX, Nintendo 64, and the Dreamcast games. Over 100 games and several consoles with additional hardware.
So... That kinda sucks.
What bothers me in addition to losing my valuables there is that the remaining part of my collection, the GBA, NDS, GCN, 360 and PS3 feels of "no use", except for the actual gaming fun.
The collection is ruined anyway, right?
Thanks Mr. Grinch.
Games via digital distribution is both great and aweful for this. The games I own from Xbox Live, PSN and Steam; I can't lose them. That is, untill the services are shut down. And that WILL happen. I hate thinking about that. Not because of the money I've spent there, but because I'll lose the games eventually. The PS3 HDD will crash eventually and if there is no PSN to get them from again, what will I do? I suppose there will be "some way" to get them, but still...
The bad thing about the games you get via digital distribution is that they don't actually have any collector's value, if you ask me. Just downloading a bunch of zeroes and ones without any limitation in availability. Not by numbers nor by location.
I had a Sonic 10th Anniversary release imported from Japan via China, gosh darn it!
Okay, I've complained enough now. I guess I should try and squeeze some game design into this by using a crowbar.
Hrmph...
Now, got it! Don't take away from the player, because you risk having them being upset. It's allowed to kill the player in game, of course. It's allright to drain some mana if he casts a spell. This is simple economics; having the player pay for something.
However, think long and hard before punishing the player. What will happen? I for one, for example, don't think it's okay to take away score from the player, if the game is about getting on a highscore-table.
If the player has worked hard to gain something (like me with my collection...), it's not okay taking it away. That's why I don't like when role playing games steals XP and levels. I can get it back, but all it takes is time. The same thing goes for score in a highscore game.
If it's possible to get a star on each level by completing it fast enough, the player should never be able to lose a star, as a consequence for doing something bad. If I've gotten a star on 38/50 levels after a lot of hard work, and I all of sudden lose 15 of them because I died on a Star Stealing Boss, the remaining 23 won't feel as valuable anymore.
It's never okay to punish the player and thereby making the game feel boring or too irritating.
Okay, enough obvious complaining and forced game design.
1 year and 7 days experience in the biz
Today I, as well as everyone else at the Studio, got fired.
I shouldn't go into details about the circumstances, but I'll say that I'm disappointed.
Time to search for a new job I suppose! Watch out world, here I come!
Sonic Poem
There's a contest over at the Swedish site Gamereactor in which you're to write a poem about Sonic. I thought I'd enter with some forced rhymes.
So if you know Swedish, here goes:
Han är snabb som få,
Skor röda, kropp som är blå,
Han hade sin era,
Nu är besvikelserna flera,
På jakt efter emeralder av kaos,
sprang han mellan Sverige och Laos,
Vi saknar alla hans tid,
Men låt honom vila i frid!Arcade Berg
Btw, in no way is this okay:
